Doha — The Palestinian armed group Hamas has confirmed the election of Khalil al-Hayya as its new overall leader, succeeding Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by the Israeli military in Gaza in October 2024. Hayya, a prominent figure, previously headed the movement's operations in Gaza from exile, signaling a continuation of a hardline stance within the organization.

Hayya gained significant international exposure as Hamas's chief negotiator, spearheading delegations in indirect ceasefire discussions held in Egypt and Qatar.
