Barretos, Brazil — Ekhbary News Agency

Alessa Esper, a 21-year-old engineering student, has been crowned Queen of the 71st Barretos Rodeo Festival 2026, realizing a lifelong ambition. The announcement, made this past Friday at North Shopping Barretos, also saw law student Samyra Gonçalves, also 21, named Princess. This annual event, a cornerstone of Brazilian sertaneja culture, prepares to welcome thousands to its iconic Parque do Peão from August 20-30, 2026.

A Dream Realized for the New Queen

Esper, a native of Prata, Minas Gerais, who grew up in Barretos, expressed profound joy at her victory. "It's the realization of a dream I've carried since childhood," she stated, adding that the title signifies a mission to represent Barretos, its culture, and Latin America's largest rodeo festival with immense dedication and pride. Her journey involved a rigorous selection process, where ten finalists were judged on beauty, charisma, stage presence, and their knowledge of the festival's rich history. Winning this prestigious role, for what it's worth, is a testament to her deep connection to the event.

Princess Samyra's Triumphant Return

Samyra Gonçalves, hailing from Iguatemi, Mato Grosso do Sul, also shared her excitement. Having resided in Barretos for six years, she previously competed in 2023. Her return to the contest, now with international modeling experience, culminated in her being named Princess. Gonçalves articulated her honor, vowing to represent the tradition with respect and gratitude. The ceremony itself was a vibrant display of sertaneja heritage, featuring traditional catira dances and viola caipira performances, underscoring the cultural significance of the festival. Beyond the sashes, the winners received electric motorcycles and a full scholarship for the Queen, marking the beginning of their year-long reign.
