Claude Tightens Usage Limits More Aggressively During Peak Hours

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has announced a significant adjustment to the usage policies for its advanced AI model, Claude. The company is now enforcing more stringent limits on its five-hour session caps, particularly during periods of high demand, commonly referred to as peak hours. This strategic move is designed to better manage the burgeoning user base and the computational resources required to serve them, while the firm assures users that their overall weekly usage allowances will remain unaffected.

Thariq Shihipar, an engineer working on Claude Code at Anthropic, detailed the changes in a post on the social media platform X. He explained that the primary alteration involves users consuming their five-hour session limits at a faster rate during these high-demand intervals. This adjustment is a direct response to the growing demand for Claude, a sophisticated large language model that competes in a rapidly evolving AI landscape. The company's decision highlights the immense pressure on infrastructure and processing power as AI adoption accelerates globally.

Unlike some competitors, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT which typically operates with daily message limits, Claude employs a session-based system. Users are allocated a certain capacity within a five-hour window. Once this limit is reached, they must either wait for the next session window to refresh or opt for a less advanced model. Shihipar indicated that an estimated 7% of users, particularly those subscribed to premium tiers like Pro and Max, might encounter these session limits more frequently under the new policy. To mitigate potential disruptions, he advised users who engage in token-intensive background jobs to reschedule them for off-peak hours, thereby extending the utility of their session allowances.

This policy update comes at a time when AI companies are under intense scrutiny to balance service availability with operational costs and scalability. In a prior instance earlier in March 2026, Anthropic had temporarily doubled usage rates for users outside of peak hours, a change that was communicated through official channels. The current announcement, however, originated from an individual engineer on social media rather than an official company statement, a departure from previous communication strategies. This less formal dissemination has raised questions about transparency and potential user awareness, with concerns that many users might remain unaware of the altered terms.

The move by Anthropic reflects a broader trend within the AI industry, where companies are continuously recalibrating their service models to cope with user demand and technological advancements. Users of Claude, especially those in the Pro and Max plans, will need to adopt a more strategic approach to their usage patterns. This involves paying closer attention to the time of day they interact with the AI, as peak hours vary significantly across different time zones. For instance, users in the Pacific Time Zone (PT) may find it beneficial to use Claude primarily from late morning onwards, while those observing Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) might need to avoid the early afternoon and evening hours. This necessitates a heightened awareness of how AI services are delivered, as usage parameters are becoming increasingly dynamic.

Shihipar acknowledged the potential frustration this change might cause, stating, “I know this was frustrating.” He reassured users that Anthropic is committed to investing in efficient scaling solutions and promised to provide further updates on their progress. While such adjustments can be disruptive, they underscore the complex engineering and economic challenges faced by leading AI providers striving to deliver high-quality services while managing resources effectively in an era of unprecedented demand.
